After 5 years in the role, this will be my last issue of Clinical Medicine as editor-in-chief. I handed over the reins to Dr Paul Grant, endocrinologist and general physician in Brighton, at the beginning of this year with a mixture of relief and regret.

It has been a huge pleasure and privilege to edit Clinical Medicine, a journal in many ways unique, functioning as a journal of record on college matters, as a medium for original work from clinical research to hospital services, as a provider of continuing medical education and for wide-ranging editorial comment. Surveys of opinion among members and fellows emphasise that it is among the most valued of the Royal College of Physicians’ offerings, and that is thanks to the authors who submit in large numbers and the host of reviewers to whom any editor is highly indebted. Apart from the minor issue of content, the success of the journal reflects a huge amount of highly professional work in the publications department, to whom I am extremely grateful. I have no doubt the journal will thrive and improve under Paul’s leadership, and wish both him and the journal itself every success in the future.
