Inaccessible back: frustration and misery of lonely patients
Aims
To introduce an idea of a new medical device to apply topical treatments in relatively inaccessible parts of the body.
Methods
For any clinician, compliance is a major issue. Most of the time it is the unwillingness of the patients, however, on rarer occasions it might be that inability is the root cause of noncompliance. As we are seeing a rise in older people population who often have limited mobility and flexibility, we need to think of new formulations and devices to accommodate their needs. I would like to present the idea of a new medical device to deliver topical preparations, which aims to improve patient's compliance and satisfaction.
Results
To explain the necessity of such an innovation and the primary design of above mentioned device.
Conclusion
Topical preparations play a major role in dermatological conditions, be it inflammatory or dysplastic. However, often patients, especially older patients living on their own find it difficult to apply topical preparations in relatively inaccessible parts of their body, such as their back.
This innovative idea describes combination of inhaler/flex-pen type device containing topical preparations with releasing button and adjustable handle, which will be much easier to apply on specific areas which are not easily accessible.
Conflict of interest statement
This idea has been published in an article in BMJ Innovations. It has also been accepted for poster presentation in an international dermatology conference in Ireland. However, it was not presented as I was unable to attend for personal reasons.
