Adequate intake of calcium, vitamin D, increasing physical activity, a strategy of avoiding falls, cessation of smoking and avoiding excessive alcohol intake are pivotal in maintaining healthy bones in all age groups. Oral bisphosphonates remain the most cost-effective first line of treatment.
