Healthcare in China is primarily a market-based system, driven principally by demand, but the necessary supervision is relatively ineffective. There is a lack of trust between patients, who act as paying clients, and doctors, who often put the institution first, leading to frequent medical disputes. The University of Hong Kong Shenzhen Hospital is a joint venture between the city of Shenzhen and the University, with the mission to provide a new healthcare model in China. A clear process is in place to improve the clinical standard while a clean governance structure is set up. The hospital has ushered in many new initiatives. It is hoped that these will serve as a model for healthcare reform in China.
