Clinical leaders should regularly meet with referrers to champion the benefits of fast-track surgery to clinicians and managers, discuss cases and gain feedback. Ensure dedicated staff are available to manage the workload associated with fast-track referrals and keep patients well-informed throughout their treatment journey. This may require additional funding, but costs will be rapidly offset by financial benefits of earlier surgery. Ensure adequate theatre space is available to accommodate fast-track referrals. ‘Start small’ in a few referring centres and learn from experience to resolve organisational challenges. Consider providing referrers with a defined protocol to ensure that the correct information is provided with each referral.
