Role of the acute medical unit

  • Stabilise acutely ill medical patients

  • Fully differentiate the presenting complaint or problem, and commence treatment and monitoring in the context of other underlying conditions and background status

  • Transfer these patients, when stable and if required, to the most appropriate place for ongoing care (eg AMU, SDEC, home, speciality or GIM ward)

  • Carry out medication reconciliation if admitted, including deprescribing if appropriate

  • Ensure timely and appropriate speciality input to the patients care, which may be required early in the episode or on follow up

  • Minimise length of stay by delivering safe and effective care for short stay patients
