Inflammatory and fibrotic processes ultimately lead to an elevation in the concentration of plasma creatinine and a progressive decrease of GFR, resulting in kidney failure [78]. One key stimulus activating inflammatory and fibrotic processes is oxidative stress, which has been described as an important risk factor in CKD and can be induced through oxygen supplementation in premature infants.
